Roommate Won't Pay Their Share — Here's What to Do

THE PROBLEM: One roommate pays late, underpays, or stops contributing to shared expenses. This creates financial strain and resentment for everyone else.

STEP 1 — DOCUMENT EVERYTHING: Log all payments and missed payments in HomeCo. Screenshot transaction records. Build a clear picture before confronting them.

STEP 2 — DIRECT CONVERSATION: Choose a calm moment. Present the facts without accusation. 'You've missed the last three utility payments. That's $X. What's going on?'

STEP 3 — SET A FIRM DEADLINE: Give a specific date for catching up. Put it in writing via HomeCo messaging. Offer a payment plan if they're struggling.

STEP 4 — ESCALATE IF NEEDED: If they still don't pay, involve the landlord. Check your lease — in many cases, all roommates are jointly liable. Consider legal options for small claims court.

STEP 5 — PREVENTION: Set up auto-pay through HomeCo going forward. Require a security deposit from unreliable roommates. Consider whether this person should stay.
