Roommate Is Always in Drama or Gossip — How to Create Peace
The Problem
Your roommate is always in the middle of some conflict — with their partner, other friends, or even you. Gossip sessions, emotional venting, and dramatic phone calls fill your shared space.
Set Emotional Boundaries
It's okay to be supportive, but you're not a therapist. Say: "I want to be here for you, but I'm not in a good headspace for heavy conversations right now." Set limits on venting sessions.
Don't Engage With Gossip
When your roommate starts gossiping about others, redirect. "I don't really have an opinion on that." or "Let's talk about something else." Don't feed the cycle.
Protect Common Areas
Your shared living room shouldn't feel like a therapy waiting room. If dramatic phone calls are constant, suggest they take them in their room or outside.
Lead by Example
Keep your own communication calm, direct, and drama-free. Over time, the contrast between your approach and theirs may encourage a shift.
When It Affects You Directly
If the drama turns toward you — passive-aggressive comments, gossiping about you to others — address it immediately. "I heard you said X about me. Let's talk about it directly."
