Roommate Keeps Eating My Food

Food disappearing from the fridge is a uniquely personal violation. It is your stuff, you paid for it, and someone else is consuming it. Small in dollar terms but huge in trust erosion. Here is how to handle it.

The problem is your roommate eats or uses your personal food and groceries without asking. Sometimes it is accidental because they genuinely forget what is shared versus personal, and sometimes it is deliberate. Either way it costs you money and feels disrespectful.

First step is to establish a clear labeling system. Use a marker, tape, or a label maker to mark personal items. Have a designated shared shelf and a personal shelf in the fridge and pantry. Remove all ambiguity about what belongs to whom.

Have a direct conversation saying you have noticed some of your food has been eaten. Explain you buy specific things for your meals and it is frustrating when they are not there when needed. Propose setting up a clear system for personal versus shared food.

Consider expanding shared food because sometimes a shared food budget would solve the problem entirely. If you have similar tastes, a shared grocery fund where everyone contributes equally and shops together can eliminate food ownership conflicts.
