Start with the Landlord

Before any pet discussion between flatmates, check your tenancy agreement. Many UK rentals have a strict no-pets clause, and violating it can lead to eviction. If pets are allowed, there may be restrictions on type, size, or number. Some landlords require an additional pet deposit.

Never surprise your flatmates with a pet. Even if the landlord says yes, the people you live with get a veto.

Creating the Policy

Discuss: who is the primary owner (responsible for vet bills, food, exercise), who cares for the pet when the owner is away, financial split for pet-related costs, behaviour expectations (no barking at night, no scratching furniture), cleanliness standards (litter box, hair cleanup, smell control), and what happens if someone develops allergies.
