First Night Essentials Checklist for New Roommates
Surviving Night One
The first night in a new shared home is chaotic. You're tired, everything's in boxes, and you realise you forgot towels. This checklist ensures you (or your new roommate) have the bare essentials sorted before the first night.
The Essentials
☐ Bedding (sheets, pillow, duvet or blanket)
☐ Towels (at least 2: one for body, one for hair)
☐ Toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo)
☐ Phone charger
☐ Pyjamas and a change of clothes for tomorrow
☐ Water bottle or reusable cup
☐ Basic medications (painkillers, allergy meds)
☐ Snacks (you won't feel like cooking)
☐ Earplugs and eye mask (unfamiliar noises and light)
☐ A small light or lamp for your room
☐ Toilet paper (always check — shared homes run out)
☐ Lock for your bedroom door if applicable
For the Existing Roommates
If you're welcoming someone new, prepare: a clean room, working light, Wi-Fi password written down, a welcome note, and a recommendation for the nearest late-night shop. Small gestures make a huge difference on night one.
