Roommate Moving Out Checklist

30 Days Before Move-Out

Start the process early to avoid last-minute chaos. Confirm the exact move-out date in writing. Calculate any outstanding shared expenses and make sure all shared bills are settled up to the move-out date. Discuss how the security deposit will be handled — will the outgoing roommate get their share returned by the landlord or by the remaining tenants? Agree on this in writing to prevent future disputes.

The Final Week

Schedule the final walk-through of the outgoing roommate's room and any shared spaces they were responsible for. Create a cleaning checklist for their space — it should be returned in the same condition as move-in, minus normal wear. Document the room's condition with photos both before and after cleaning. Transfer any utility accounts that are in the departing roommate's name to a remaining roommate.

Move-Out Day Tasks

Collect all keys, access cards, and garage remotes from the departing roommate. Confirm forwarding address for any remaining deposits or mail. Do a final check of common areas for any of their remaining belongings. Update your HomeCo household by removing the departing member and adjusting expense splits and chore assignments.

After They've Gone

Adjust the rent split among remaining roommates if applicable. Reassign any chores that were the departing roommate's responsibility. Update all shared accounts and subscriptions. If a new roommate is moving in, start the preparation process for their arrival using the move-in checklist.
