Hosting a House Party Checklist for Roommates

A successful house party in a shared home requires coordination, consent, and cleanup planning. This checklist ensures every roommate is on board and the event is fun without causing lasting damage to your home or relationships.

Get unanimous agreement from all roommates at least one week in advance. Discuss the date, time, expected number of guests, and type of party. Anyone who is not comfortable should have their concerns addressed before planning proceeds.

Establish boundaries for the event. Which rooms are off limits? Is the party confined to common areas? Where should guests put coats and bags? Setting physical boundaries protects personal spaces and reduces cleanup.

Plan for noise and neighbors. Let neighbors know in advance about the party and when you expect it to end. Agree on a volume policy and designate someone to monitor noise levels as the evening progresses.

Arrange food, drinks, and supplies. Decide whether costs are split among roommates or covered by the host. Stock up on basics like cups, napkins, trash bags, and toilet paper. Plan for more than you think you need.

Post-party cleanup should happen the next morning at the latest. The person who organized the party takes primary responsibility, but all roommates can help. Return all shared spaces to their normal state within 12 hours.
